MACo conducts research projects largely involving the participation of county government professionals. Research is conducted upon request by General Assembly members, General Assembly committees, county elected or appointed officials, or in the course of advising MACo's Legislative Committee on pending legislation impacting county government.

MACo's two largest research projects:

Budget & Tax Rate Survey
Published annually, the Budget and Tax Rates Survey (BTRS) contains data compiled from a summer survey of all Maryland county budget and finance offices. Includes population data estimates and income from the State of Maryland Office of the Comptroller and the Departments of Assessments & Taxation, and Health and Mental Hygiene.

Salary Survey
Published annually, the FY Salary Survey of Maryland County Governments includes salaries of county elected, appointed and hired full-time positions for all Maryland counties and Baltimore City using responses from Human Resource Offices of each Maryland county and Baltimore City.
